Mar'i hurt his leg working in Israel in 2019; it worsened after soldiers beat him when his family was forced out of Tulkarem camp, and he cannot afford treatment. The family has moved four times since January 2025, owes shopkeepers, and faces eviction. Many Tulkarem families relied on jobs in Israel before permits were revoked after October 2023.
More than 33,000 people were forced out of the Jenin, Nur Shams and Tulkarem camps in early 2025, UNRWA's largest West Bank displacement since 1967. Director Roland Friedrich says 85% of them have no regular income and over 80% now pay rent; the closed military zone over the camps is renewed every two months.
