  1. Harvest that once gave a labourer three months of work now gives one day

Gaza's agriculture authorities estimate barely 150,000 of 2 million olive trees still stand and expect about 700 tons of oil instead of the usual 5,000. Grower Haidar Abu Middain, 60, whose family orchard once filled up to 900 16-litre drums, expects two drums from 20 or 30 surviving trees; oil sells near $500 a drum, about triple the pre-war price.

  2. Olive yields fall by up to 80% while pressing costs triple

Baraka says groves east of Salah al-Din Street and around the 'yellow line' are out of reach for farmers in Deir al-Balah, Bureij and Maghazi. Fertiliser, water, labour, transport and storage containers are all short. Gaza's Agriculture Ministry says 87% of farmland (158,909 of 182,247 dunams) is damaged.
